The Borsalino hat is an icon created by the stylish film noir. During Hollywood’s golden years, everyone wore a Borsalino. What few people know is that these hats were made in Alessandria, a provincial town in Northern Italy, in a factory headed by the same family for over 120 years. It all started with Giuseppe Borsalino who, after having obtained the title of «maître Chapelier» in Paris in 1857, opened the first hat workshop in Alessandria. In a noir movies style we will tell the story of a family, a community of workers and a town. BORSALINO CITY, the history of the most popular hat in the world.

For over forty years Ettore Bozzolo, at the tollgate of Highway A6 Torino-Savona, collects tickets and money, returns coins, interacts with anonymous motorists. Through his window he saw Italy transform and his role diminish: its function is now replaced by Telepass and ATMs, and in his days at the tollgate must above all provide vocal assistance to those trapped by the system . At the same time, however, the uniform of the “casellante” constitutes a mask for Ettore.

Its true habitat is the wood: a clean, tidy wood, designed by his own hands over time and kept as a place of worship, a sacred space within which it is possible to find oneself. It is the chestnut grove, a place of production and silence, of interchange with creation and of dialogue with future generations.
Since his father's death, which occurred thirty years earlier, Ettore has begun to dedicate his life to the recovery, management and care of chestnut trees. Since 2000 it has purchased more than 20 hectares of abandoned woods, undertaking a slow re-domestication of domestic chestnuts compromised by abandonment.
In parallel with this action, Ettore has created, within Slow Food, the Community of “Custodi dei Castagneti” of the Mongia Valley, through which it organizes popular meetings at schools and audiences of all kinds, welcoming more than 400 visitors every year, coming from the 5 continents.

Despite his long commitment, Ettore faces every day in the woods as if he were the first, with innate passion and frequent ability to be moved by the mysteries of his trees, patriarchs outside of time.
This is also why, in order to be free to devote himself entirely to them, in 2019 Ettore decided to resign to the Highway, working at a Community Cooperative (of which he is a founding member) engaged in the recovery of chestnut groves in the Alta Val Tanaro.

Together with the boys of the Cooperative, old and new migrants of the marginal areas, Ettore is setting up a 'Castagneto for biodiversity', in which he recovers and inserts the numerous varieties of chestnuts once present on the slopes of the Alps and the Apennines of the whole of Italy.
For twenty years now, Ettore's action has been followed by his son Sandro. A documentary filmmaker who often travels around the world, Sandro learned about his father through the video camera, getting closer to his action to try to unravel its ultimate meaning. Nevertheless, his relationship with chestnut groves is different, ambivalent.
While Sandro has frequented chestnut trees since childhood, on the other hand his gaze cannot recognize the complexity of relationships and deep dynamics that move Ettore's passion.
Sandro therefore follows his father's action with the curiosity of the documentary filmmaker engaged in the portrait of the protagonist of his film, without ever manifesting, at least until the end, what he really thinks.

Carlo Mollino ... who was he really?
With a rhetorical question begins our journey to discover the genius of Turin. This is not an inappropriate question if one tries to go beyond the curtain of the esteemed professor and professional, architect of public buildings, photographer and designer, to grasp the restless and creative essence. Carlo Mollino was born in 1905 in Turin, where he lives and works until his death in 1973. He has been a great eclectic in his tastes and his works: designer of interiors and furniture, of a car, he writes a manual on skiing, a large volume on the art of photography, participates in air acrobatics contests, writes two novels and several critical essays on architecture. On his letterhead is written Architect, and Mollino, in fact, practises the profession of architect from 1931, but who else was he? A lover of speed that deals with building statics. A mountain lover who approaches the technique of skiing with a physical-mathematical approach to the philosophical aim of leading every skier to "find himself". A reckless driver of cars and aircraft with which he will participate in numerous acrobatic competitions, including international ones. The total freedom from any technical, cultural and academic bond together with rigorous research make this architect an absolute inventor of forms and of very original aesthetic balances, which fascinates and at the same time makes it difficult to tell. We have chosen to do it using and comparing the essential lines and curves that we find in all his creations and in the trajectories he designed as skier and aviator. Mollino is a child of his time; of a technological and industrial revolution that provided new tools for understanding and modifying reality. And it is precisely this somewhat "wonderful" and somewhat technological element that will allow us to give a partial answer to the initial question.
